Something Else

I don't get the opportunity too often to do portraiture, but enjoy it. It's a natural extension of other things I do and the type of art I create, namely, representational realism. So, here's something I did a couple weeks back. I actually worked from video vs. photo or life. I found it interesting, and preferable in some ways to photographs. Photographs freeze an instant, but the slight shift of expression a moment or two before or later might've been preferable. As well, one holding a face is often a bit more strained than if they did so with less stress, knowing that they don't have to freeze for the one moment the shutter clicks. I'll keep this in mind for future use.

  1. A Big Thanks from San Jose~!! Mr. Gallegos~

My name is Yu Ming Yu, from the illustration program at San Jose State University;I am one of the prize winner this year.

thank you so much for your previous post to let me know about the judging process in the SOI student scholarship competition; otherwise, I would think I just won it by luck. I noticed that there were actually TONS of good artworks in the show this year, you guys must have a hard time to decide whom the prize should go to. (once again, I was so surprised I won the scholarship. and I am really excited about the Master painting class during this summer!! Can't wait at all.)

Anyway, I like your delicate drawing here; it reminds me Dean Cornwell's portrait drawings. :D

  2. Hey Yu (I bet you get that all the time). So you're the Master Class recipient, eh? Congrats! I do seem to recall that went to an SJSU student (I pumped my fist each time, since the CCA student didn't get any money I had to root for the next home team). I'm glad you're willing to make the extra travel/time commitment--I hope you get a ton out of it.

And thanks for the kudos. Having my name and Cornwell's within even two paragraphs of each other in proximity is a compliment.
